Studio Nila (नील) is an art collective dedicated to uplifting the textile legacy of East Bengal—now Bangladesh—through the lenses of beauty, resistance, craft and living heritage.
Once a stop on the Silk Road and known around the world for its fine muslin, Bangladesh has a rich history of master quilters, weavers, indigo cultivators and natural dyers that stretches back centuries, long before fast fashion and mass garment production defined the global image of Bangladesh. We view these arts as living culture—expressions of craftsmanship and legacy that can be sustained by both honoring their histories and keeping them alive through evolutions and imaginings in fashion, design and art.
We collaborate with, celebrate and support master artisans to continue their vital work.
“Nila” (नील) is the Sanskrit root for the word blue in many South Asian languages, even those historically excluded from the elite Sanskritic sphere. In Bengali, blue is nil — নীল (pronounced neel).
